Sjogren's Syndrome |

Sjogren's (pronounced show-grins) syndrome
is a chronic, autoimmune disorder in which the body's immune
system mistakenly attacks it's own moisture-producting
glands. Lymphocytes, a type of white blood cell, infiltrate and
destroy these glands causing decreased production of saliva and
tears. The hallmark of symptoms of Sjogren's syndrome are
dry eyes and dry mouth. Sjogren's Syndrome Foundation "The Sjogren's Syndrome Foundation, founded in 1983, provides patients practical information and coping strategies that minimize the effects of Sjogren's syndrome. In addition, the Foundation is the clearinghouse for medical information and is the recognized national advocate for Sjogren's syndrome." National Sjogren's Syndrome Association An international, non-profit, organization dedicated to providing emotional support to patients and their families and educational information to both patients and health care professionals world-wide. |
